President Lynette's Message

Hi everyone,

Wow!! What a week – we certainly had our fair share of changes in the weather and that wind was something else.  Thankfully we had no damage, but it was sad to see the blossom on the trees get decimated, just when they were looking so lovely.

With no formal meeting scheduled, this last week was our “come if you like, eat if you want, no apologies needed” gathering, which saw a good number of members and partners come along, plenty of chatter, and obviously time isn’t a factor, as it was well after eight when we wandered home.

Just a reminder, always, friends, family, partners, Past and Honorary members are welcome and invited to come along to any of our activities, dinners, or meetings, we don’t have to have a special occasion or invitation.  Just let Lionel know in advance to include in the numbers if it’s a “formal” meeting.

We will have the Hot Dog van in action this Saturday at the Rugby Semi-finals at Pleasant Point, only one game and hopefully, South Canterbury will be successful and move on to the final.

It's our visit to the Gallery at Winchester followed by afternoon tea at Mia Flora on the 8th of October (this Sunday) and I’m really looking forward to this.

It is also “Bookarama” at Trinity Church Hall, this weekend, organized by the Rotary Club of Timaru North.  It's always a good chance to have a clean-out of books – or stock up on more.

Temuka-Geraldine 75th Anniversary on 28th October will be supported by some of our club members, and Tony Henderson is also organizing a trip to the Theatre on Tuesday 31st October, contact Tony for tickets.
October is certainly a busy month.

“Toot for Tucker” – organized by Timaru Suburban Lions will take place on Monday 20th November, please note it in the calendar, club members are usually supportive in helping at this event.
Also, 3rd December is the Santa Parade and the Rose Festival – always a very busy day for us as we have the Hot Dog van in action down at the Rose Festival (check out the roster if you can help) and we also call on members to fulfill Road Marshall & Health & Safety duties for the parade.

“Santa Paws” project formulation has started but a Convenor is needed to assist Cheryl Rose if this is to proceed.
“Xmas Angels” expression of interest was sought from Julie Dockrill, and followed up with an email from Jess Hewitson.

Next week will also be another week without a meeting, but for those who wish to, an invitation is extended to join in a meal at the same venue, 5:30-6pm, a meal of your choice to order, or not, if you just wish to come along - no apologies needed.

Our next scheduled meeting will be on the 17th October.

Catch up again soon,

Lynette Wilson
President

DUNEDIN HARBOUR CYCLE TRIP

The Social Committee is working on a trip to Dunedin to cycle the recently opened loop track around Dunedin Harbour.
We're looking forward to your company!!!! Main requirement at this stage would be to get your posterior used to a bike seat.

We are planning to drive to Dunedin on 5 Nov, complete the trail 6 Nov and come home the same day.
  • It's flat
  • It won't be a race
  • It's a dedicated cycle trail
  • Dunedin to Portobello 18.50 km
  • Boat across the harbour (takes electric and normal bikes)
  • Port Chalmers to Dunedin 13.40 km
  • If you only wanted to bike part of it, that could be sorted
We would need to know the numbers in October to book the boat. The boat is the only limiting factor. It can make multiple trips if necessary

Bruce, Lance, Ian or Jenny are happy to answer any questions.

THE CASE OF THE MISSING TOMAHAWK

At 11:55 am on Saturday 30 September, a missing tomahawk report was filed with the Bulletin Police.

After a thorough search of the property at Shed 2, 125 Hayes Street, Timaru, it was ascertained that a dust-covered Rotarian was the likely culprit of the brazen tomahawk robbery.

The Bulletin Police are calling for any witnesses to come forward with any information or descriptions of the culprit.
Please send your information to the head of the investigation Superintendent Jim Garden.  He will be able to discuss and advise as to the description, make and model of the tomahawk as he is a longtime friend of the now missing tomahawk.
The Bulletin Police want to thank you for your assistance with this matter.

UPDATE 21:00Hrs.  After hours of scouring around the homes of Timaru, many emails of potential sightings of the missing tomahawk, and the offering of K9 sniffer assistance, the Bulletin Police can now confirm that the missing tomahawk has been located.

The culprit has come forward and admitted a case of mistaken tomahawk identity.
As this was not a case of intentional unlawful possession, simply a case of needing to clean one’s glasses, the Bulletin Police will not be pressing charges.  The offending culprit will be returning the tomahawk to its lawful owner in the very near future.

You call all rest easy and enjoy your weekend knowing that your tomahawks are now safe in the garden shed.
The Bulletin Police thank you all for your assistance in the matter.

VICTIM STATEMENT: 1st Oct 9 am.  What an outstanding result from your investigative journalism you are up there with Morse and Frost. Thank you for your attention to tracking down the priceless item as I have a sleepless night worrying that I may not see it again. I am deeply indebted to you for your following up on my beloved tomahawk. Superintendent Jim
