President Lynette's Message

Hi everyone,

This week Jenette Borrell shared her recollection of a Key-note speaker at an Altrusa Conference she attended in San Antonio earlier this year.  The speaker was Alex Johnson, a Rotarian, reflecting on “Relentless Service”.
There were many interesting and thought-provoking ideas for membership and projects, which relate to any Club or Group, equally as relevant to Rotary, as it was Altrusa.

It was with much pleasure that we were able to announce that following full support from the Board, an application was made on behalf of the Charitable Trust, via the RJ & CF Moyes Trust, for funding of resources to assist club members Julie Dockrill and Jessica Hewitson, along with Tina Hewitt in delivering their Thaplung, Nepal project.  This is fantastic and so much appreciated by everyone, especially Julie & Jess.

As I mentioned in last week’s bulletin, we had a busy weekend with a good number of members and friends in the Hot Dog Van in action at the CAMS Classic Motorcycle event at Levels Raceway.  Apart from wind on Saturday, the weather stayed fine, and our Hot Dogs & chips were well appreciated and sought after.  Thank you to everyone who helped in any way, and it was a great opportunity for our prospective member, John Rushton, to experience first-hand the fun we have whilst serving the community.

We are in action again on the 1st Dec at the Night market at the Te Aitarkihi Marae, then at the Rose Festival, Sunday 3rd December. Once again, thank you to those who are making this happen, let’s hope for some fine weather.

Thank you to those of you who have indicated availability for Marshalling or Health & Safety on Sunday 3rd Dec for the Santa Parade, your assistance is certainly appreciated as it will be a very busy day for club members.

Xmas Dinner next week, 5th December, at Austins92, Temuka. Will be a fitting way to celebrate prior to Xmas together, looking forward to catching up with everyone then.

Catch up again soon,

Lynette Wilson

TOOT FOR TUCKER 2023

Wow Greg and Timaru Rotary Club, thank you all so much for your help with Toot For Tucker.
In total we packed 207 banana boxes of food for our 3 Timaru foodbanks.  That compares to 204 in 2022, but I think they were better packed this year (i.e. the boxes were full rather than some partial boxes last year) so that statistic may be a little misleading.  (Even more misleading are the numbers the Timaru Herald are quoting, I’m unsure where they’ve got their numbers from!)

We went into the evening with confirmed 27 drivers with runners, and 37 areas to collect in.  What happened on the night was better than we could have expected, with more than 37 drivers volunteering!  For me it was the first time I wasn’t out on the streets as a runner, I wasn’t required.   If some of your group were there to help and then weren’t required for collecting, we’re sorry, if you were involved with the splitting up of maps to allow for more out driving – thank you.  If you have ideas on how things could be done better in future years for you and your team, please let me know.
We couldn’t do this without Timaru Rotary, please thank everyone involved, and it’s always a delight to be doing a community event together.

Wishing you all a peaceful and fun filled festive season,
Vicki Gould

THE THAPLUNG WOMEN, CHILDREN'S AND COMMUNITY HEALTH PROJECT, NEPAL

Julie and Jess have finally had the approval to carry out their proposed Nepal Project in March 2024.  The pair will travel with another midwife, Tina Hewitt from Christchurch, to remote Nepal to carry out an educational program for locals of the area.  Click here to read about the Project.

They have started a Facebook page "The Thaplung Women, Children's and Community Health Project, Nepal" where you can follow their journey, and any fundraisers will be posted on there.   The page looks like this:

There is still a shortfall within the budget due to delays and funding Grants not coming through as anticipated, so we are on a fundraising mission! If you can help out in any way, or perhaps have some contacts who might be able to assist with the Project in any way, please let me know.

Many thanks! Jess
