As I write this, we celebrate “Matariki” and I even managed to check out the stars this morning.
Our meeting this week was very productive, with those present splitting into their assigned committee groups for this year, much discussion ensued, and it was great to share the ideas and vision together, setting some goals and paving the way for some possible changes in the way we currently operate our club.
It was also good to gain some insight from a prospective member who was attending for the second time.
We also welcomed Kaia George, who shared with us her experience and memories from attending RYLA in Christchurch in January this year.
Kaia is currently in her first year at Canterbury University, studying Law and Criminal Justice. RYLA gave her the chance to network, making new friends who she keeps in touch with, check out the campus that has now become so familiar and listen to inspirational and motivational mentors.
As a result, she has now recognized and changed her learning style and is re-focusing some of her future studies. It is always good to hear of the impact our ability to sponsor young people on courses such as RYLA, has.
Applications are now open for both RYLA Christchurch and Queenstown, so if you know of someone who you think would benefit, please let Bev Slooten know, and get them to download an application form.
We were also saddened to hear of the death this week of our Honorary member, Colin Taylor. Our thoughts are with his family, as we remember his long service to our club and our community.
