President Peter's Message

Scott Base Live. What a night! Wonderful feedback and I think we will all remember this night for a very long time.

Well done Dave for bringing this in for us and also well done to you and John when we lost sight and sound. We did have two rehearsals with Rose and Paul at Scott Base where this same situation happened so they were well prepared. I have sent an invitation to Rose and Paul to visit our club if they are ever nearby.

On Wednesday morning I met with Ken Linscott, Chairman of the Wetlands Trust to look at a possible site for our club to plant some trees as part of the Rotary International Tree Planting Initiative. The site offered is a beautiful spot by one on the lakes and now waiting to hear back from the Timaru District Council on availability and price of Totara, Matai and Kahikatea (White Pine)

Coming up on Tuesday, October 3rd, Russell and Margaret Dockrill will talk about their 3000 + kilometre drive from Adelaide to Darwin.

Our first video link ...
...talking with Rose and Paul at Scott Base

The Rotary Club of Timaru is extending its reach using video technology to make contact with people outside our local community.

We held our first such live link on Tuesday 12 September 2017 with Rose Forrester and Paul Lovegrove at Scott Base in Antarctica.
Rose is the Winter Base Leader managing the winter-over team for the 2016/17 season. She oversees the general operations at Scott Base, liaises with other International Antarctic programmes, acts as a JP for Ross Island and, as a medic, she provides medical support and emergency response for base staff and visitors.

Paul is a science technician responsible for the Scott Base Information Technology infrastructure gathering data such as measuring the regeneration of the ozone layer and changes in the sea ice to send to NIWA and thence to universities worldwide.
