President Peter's Message
Fourteen Rotarians visited the Waimate Club last Thursday. Those who could get there early had a tour of the new event centre which the Club helped to fund.
The event center staff were very gracious and took time to show us around. We were joined there by President Dylan Murray and Colin Dore.
Later at their club room we listened to Claire Rollinson, a returning R.Y.E student from Denmark. A very impressive presentation. Thanks to all at Rotary Waimate for their great hospitality.

Reconvening Of The Adjourned First Part Of AGM
President Peter wishes to reconvene the adjourned 1st part of the club AGM on Tuesday 27th February club meeting to formally move that the Rotary club of Timaru members agree to the clubs Nominations committee recommendation.
Motion: that club member Bev Slooten become Club President for the 2019/2020 Rotary year.

Horror Maze 2018.
Once again we have been asked for volunteers to help out with security "within" the maze (yes, this year some of us will actually be "in the maze" itself) and manning the front gate.
Dates are: 16th/17th Feb, 24th Feb, 2nd/3rd March and 9th/10th March. Times 8.30pm-11.30pm and they are
asking for between 7-12 people on each date.

An Outing To The Movie "Breathe"
Social outing to movie Breathe on Wednesday February 28th at 7.00pm. This is an excellent true story about Robin and Diana Cavendish, an adventurous young couple, who refuse to give up in the face of the devastating diagnosis of Robin’s polio at just 28. Robin and Diana dare to escape the hospital ward to seek out a full life together, raising their young son, traveling and devoting their lives to helping other polio patients. The film is produced by Robin’s son and is very relevant for Rotary with our End Polio campaign. Special price of $8.00 per person. I’ve booked the 78 seat theatre, so invite friends and family! I’ve also mentioned it to Rotary North. Suggestion that we go to Zest or Coffee Culture after the film. Mongolia Childbirth project featured in Rotary International news
The Mongolia Childbirth project of which we are all so proud has made the news on the Rotary International website.
The project team led by Gary Dennison of the Waimate Rotary Club and incluiding our own Julie Dockrill has had a huge impact on infant mortality across Mongolia.

A Wee Bit Of History
1. Wishing Well – following up on the report at last meeting about some damage.
The Rotary Wishing Well on the Bay Hill was built by members in 1956 and officially “opened” by the Mayor on 26 November 1956. At that time the well had water at the bottom but that did not stop vandals stealing the money or dropping bottles and other rubbish into it and shortly afterwards a grille was added at the top. Removing the coins, cleaning and drying them and refreshing the water was quite a task and at that time a committee of four members was assigned to look after the Well.
During the Council’s redevelopment of the inner city and the Bay Hill in 1997/98 it was necessary to move the Wishing Well to its current site. By this time the old structure was showing its age and as a water supply was no longer available it was decided to completely redesign and rebuild it. Over the years the Wishing Well has provided a considerable sum to the Club’s Charitable trust funds with annual incomes fluctuating between $400 and $800.
2. Roller Skating Rink
Thank you to those club members who last year helped with water blasting the walls of the Roller Skating Rink down on Caroline Bay – it is looking really smart now.
Probably many of our members do not know the history of our club’s involvement with this facility. Members of our club built the original rink during the 1963/64 Rotary year with assistance from the Bay Carnival Committee. Members were also responsible for establishing the Timaru Roller Skating club to run the facility and promote the sport. In 2011 our club donated $11,000 towards the extension and re-sealing of the rink – $3,000 from the R.J & C.F Moyes Trust and $8,000 being a third of the profit from that year’s charity auction.

Waimate Event Centre
The Waimate Rotary Club is rightly proud of the town's new events centre. The Club contributed more that $40,000 to this great project which has had a huge effect on the local commuinity. Many groups use the Centre for a range of sports, meetings, events, and functions. A true multi-purpose centre that everyone we spoke to was, rightly, immensely proud of.
Club Projects half-year report
February 2018
Club members have contributed time, effort and funds to the following projects so far this year. Not all the projects in this list were organised by the projects committee; some are NRG led projects that members supported, and some were arranged by enterprising individuals who just went ahead and did some good works.
Douglas Street fallen tree project: An NRG led project supported by other Club members to tidy up a fallen tree on a Douglas Street property. A win-win project; a person received the help she wanted, and the NRG group got funds.
Hot Dog Van: Many members contribute time to the Hot Dog Van; Paul and Bruce spend countless hours ensuring supplies are on hand and the caravan is well stocked for each session, Jenny looks after the roster, and many members and friends staff the van. So far over 355 volunteer hours this Rotary year – over 2 months full-time work
Red Cross Book Sale: Willing helpers packed up the remaining books after the Red Cross Book Sale.
Roller skating rink fence: A much-needed freshen up of the concrete block fence surrounding the roller skating rink on Caroline Bay
Blood pressure monitoring: at the Highfield supermarket
Wetlands Tree Planting: The Club purchased and planted trees in the Otipua Wetlands and ensured they were watered over the following weeks.
Home Show catering: Jess Hewitson and the NRG team arranged catering at the Home Show supported by other Club members
Jacks Point Light House plaque: Bruce Borrell and some of his bikie friends saw the need for a plaque to inform the public of the history of the Jacks Point Light House … so they just went ahead and did it. The club stumped up some funds to support this initiative.
Plunket Horror Maze: Several members helped Plunked by providing manpower (can we say that?) for the parking area at the Horror Maze near Waimate.
Firewood project: The NRG team secured a supply of firewood which they gathered, split and delivered with the help of club members.
Cataract Surgery: The Club donated $5,000 to the Fred Hollows Foundation to fund cataract operations for 200 people in the South Pacific.
Curtain Bank Project: The Club has agreed to support a project organised by Jo Goodhew to make pre-used curtains available to the needy in our community.
Food Bank Project: The Club is supporting Presbyterian Support South Canterbury in developing a food bank project. As a result of Paul Dewsbery’s input the initial project concept has been revised, and Paul continues to represent the Club on the planning group.
Community Christmas Dinner: Club members collected and transported kitchen equipment, crockery, utensils and Christmas decorations from the club's storage container at Robert Odey's yard. On Christmas day the equipment was collected, returned and stacked back in the container.
Current projects under investigation / development / being planned:
Timaru Technology Education Centre (TTEC) equipment: A proposal is due to be presented to the next Board meeting for funding for a piece of equipment for TTEC.
Emergency Response Kits: A guest speaker will explain Rotary’s Emergency Response Kit project to members, after which we’ll make a decision about club involvement in supporting this project.
Hot Dog Van maintenance: Paul is leading a group maintaining the Hot Dog Van. Signwriting on the van is to be upgraded over the next few weeks.
Playground Equipment Project: The Committee is continuing to explore options for a playground equipment project.
The Projects Committee has a couple of other projects under consideration which are not yet at a stage for a decision to be made.
Media Committee Half Time Report
Bulletin – Gilly O has completed her very long run as editor of our Club Bulletin, we thank Gilly for her good work and the ability to keep the news flowing to members of the club.
Stephen has stepped in as the collator of the Bulletin, this means Stephen to put together information that has been sent to him, he will not go hunting for information.
It is the Chairpersons and Directors of this club who are now responsible to keep information about news that they are responsible for of activity that has happened as well as advising of upcoming events and projects.
Facebook – Andrea has been busy keeping stories and photos of all things Rotary being placed on Facebook.
Club members are reminded to send stories and photos to Andrea from club events and projects.
Web Page – John B has continued to enhance the Club web page and to be a fabulous resource by answering all club members questions on club runner information. John has also run on line information sessions to help bring members up to speed on operating this valuable resource.
Development of attendance and project activity has helped the club move forward.

Youth Committee Half Time Report.
Pleased to learn that “Dictionaries in Schools” has attracted a $4,000 District Grant for this year’s programme.
The possibility of assisting Oceanview Heights and Timaru South Schools on a regular basis was explored but didn’t pan out. It is possible the Club will be asked to assist with landscaping at Oceanview Heights in 2018.
Congratulations to Angela Seyb from TGHS who was selected as the Club’s candidate to attend the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum in Auckland, January 2018. We’re delighted to acknowledge that her sister Gina, who attended the forum two year ago, has been accepted into Med School for 2018.
Otago University previously ran an annual “Hands on Science” programme. For 2018 the programme was expanded to be “Hands-On at Otago” in various disciplines. The Club has supported Alia Cooper (Science) from Craighead and Hannah Konings (Performing Arts) from Timaru Girls to attend the January 2018 programme.
The Committee tried hard but was unsuccessful in finding a candidate for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) in Balclutha in 2018. Advertising may be a better option in the future.
Information on the Speech Contest with the finals to be held at the District Conference was sent to schools prior to the Christmas break.
We’re looking forward to hearing William Pike speak to students from Timaru schools at the Mountainview Auditorium at 7pm on Tuesday 20 February. William is a sought after motivational speaker for young people. Take a look at his website williampike.co.nz to learn more about this inspiring man.
