President Bev's Message.

Greetings,

It is always a pleasure to welcome visitors to our Club meetings. We have had many over the previous weeks either partners or family members, in Jess and Tony’s case International Rotarians they met up with in Thailand following their Project Starfish project, Invercargill Rotarians visiting a very sick friend in Timaru, and our potential members. I really like the ‘buzz  of conviviality’ around the meeting room prior to 6 pm and often wish that I didn’t have to interrupt this. It is very special to hear this from the podium, thank you so much.

As per usual, Peter and Janet Russell presented a very informative and detailed account of their visit to Cape Canaveral in Florida and Mission Control in Houston. The Space Race began after WW2 when the Americans and the Russians realized that the Germans were well ahead with rocket design. So both sides quietly set out to steal documents, warheads and personnel to replicate and advance their own country’s skill set in the science of rockets. In 1959 President Eisenhower established NASA – National Aeronautics Space Administration…..

It is a very busy weekend for Rotarians in our area. The Timaru North Club have the Alpine Energy Hadlow to Harbour Fun Run on Sunday 1 March. The Waimate Club have their Big Easy a mountain bike, run or walk on Saturday 29 February. Good luck and well done to both Clubs for the weekend.

Next week we have His Worship The Mayor, Nigel Bowen presenting on ‘The future for Timaru’ – where are we now, where are we going and how will we get there? I am looking forward to hearing about this council’s outline for our district.

Enjoy your weekend, Bev

Reminder: Please submit your objections for Redistricting of Districts 9970 and 9980 this week either to Lionel or Bev.

PARTNERS ARE INVITED.

Please note: This night will be an extended programme.

Jill Worrall will be speaking on some of her travels, trials, and tribulations to countries most of us have never visited.
She is or has been a journalist, reporter, feature writer, freelance and sub-editor and has won many awards for her writing including NZ Travel Writer of the Year.
Jill has been operating small group tours for the past 20 years and visited nearly 100 countries including North Korea, Timor Leste, and Antarctica.

In fairness to Jill for her to do justice to her presentation, we have allocated extra time.

Followed by a Director's meeting for the 'Board of the Rotary Club of Timaru'.
KENNEDY SPACE CENTRE
Last week Peter and Janet Russell spoke to the Club with photos and video on their visits to the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida and the Johnston Space centre in Houston.

Peter began with some background information about the beginning of the space race and showed pictures of the Saturn 5 Rocket used for the Apollo missions.

On their second visit to Florida they had hoped to see a launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavour but this was postponed several times.  However they did see the Endeavour on the launch pad (see photo).

In Houston last year they heard a talk by the astronaut Jerry Ross who had been on no less than seven Shuttle flights.  He had undertaken many space walks, one to help set up the International Space Station.  A highlight of this visit was a view of the Houston Mission Control Room which now monitors the orbit of the ISS, and they were able to witness a live sunrise.

Peter and Janet finished with a brief presentation of their visit to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington which tracks the history of flight from the Wright brothers to the moon landing.

NRG RUBBISH COLLECTION
NRG will be heading down to the Bay to collect rubbish on Wednesday 4th March.  Meet in the carpark beside the skate park (on the seaside not the playground side) at 5.30 pm. Bring along some gloves, rubbish bags provided.

A Meal At Riverstone On Sunday 3rd May.

Further to my email sent out earlier this year about a Sunday lunch at Riverstone it is set to be held on Sunday 3rd May at 1:00 pm (thus giving time for those who wish to travel there earlier and have a look around the shops to do so).

Attached are the two menus the majority of members have indicated they would like View $40.00 menu... & $55.00 menu.

The castle tour (if available ) would be an extra $25 pp.

Someone from the Social Committee will be co-ordinating numbers (and meal preference) nearer to the time (as I will be away).

Cheers
 Peter
