President-Elect Jess's Message.

Greetings,

Stepping in for Bev this week I had the privilege to chat with our guest speaker Brenna Shaw about her experience volunteering with an organisation very familiar to us; Classrooms in the Clouds.

It was lovely to hear that the support that our club gives is going a long way to help educate the children of Nepal.  Brenna shared her amazing 3-month experience in Nepal working along side teachers and volunteers setting up libraries in 5 of the schools in the Solukhumbu region. It was great to hear that she was able to connect with Phambi Rai (the Teacher whom we have sponsored for the last couple of years) and hear of the impact she is having on the lives of the local women and children. Brenna’s had a life-changing experience that I’m sure will stay with her forever and sounds as though she will be back to Nepal in the not so distant future.

Don’t forget to get your unwanted “stuff” together for our Garage Sale on the 23rd.  The organising committee for this event have been doing an amazing job of collecting bits and pieces but are still on the lookout for more items to sell.

Have a great week!

Jess

Garage Sale Update.

Just one week till the sale.

If you were at last weeks tea meeting you should have seen the 'manpower roster' that was circulated and placed alongside your name the times you are able to help on Thursday evening (21st) between 6 & 8 pm, sorting the items on Friday (22nd) between 9 am & 6 pm at the TTCC and/or to man the 15-20 sale tables on Saturday (23rd) between 8 am & 4 pm (with the sale open for business between 9 am & 3 pm), the roster will be going around again this Tuesday as well. - four members of NRG have already offered to assist. Those who haven't indicated when they are available will be phoned.

We already have quite a lot of really good 'STUFF' but need much more so hope all members will be able to participate.

Jenny Ensor has kindly volunteered to be the cashier and operate the EFTPOS and Robin Peterson has agreed to sort the many books.

Peter

Brenna Shaw and Classrooms in the Clouds.

In 2016 TGHS started an initiative to fund a teacher in the village of Damku, with the then principal, Sarah Davis, together with funding from the Rotary Club of Timaru. The catalyst was Chris Jensen- Burke, an ex-TGHS head girl, and now a lawyer in Sydney who regularly climbs in Nepal and is now married to a Nepalese Sherpa.

Last year Brenna Shaw, a 19-year-old ex-TGHS student had the opportunity to spend three months in rural Nepal seeing first-hand the work CITC provides to many communities.
