President Bev's Message.

Greetings,

We were treated to a very comprehensive outline on the proposed 'Buses on Demand' initiative by Isabelle Bromham, the Community Transport Officer for Ecan. This initiative has come about due to the steadily declining patronage of the existing 'Timaru Bus Service'. Research had shown that only 200 people were core users and another 200 were categorized as casual users.
The best option was to work with NZTA to find a model that could work best to suit the needs of the community by covering the Washdyke, Redruth, Gleniti and Port areas. In doing so, to enable a passenger who lives in Redruth to get to their work at the Port within 20 minutes instead of at least 1 hour or more.

The key component for this initiative to succeed is community engagement and education. NSW, in Australia, has a model of 'Buses on Demand' operating and they found that once the App was explained the usage went up considerably. A manned call centre with an 0800 number will be available to help with any questions, e.g. which side of the street do I stand on? All the bus stops will remain as a point of reference.

Once a request has been made the information will be given as to how long until the next bus comes by and where you meet it. The school service will remain, as will the Gold Card 9 am-3 pm special fare, Metro Card and cash payments to the driver but no timetable. The user tells the bus when he/she wants it. This will be challenging and it is not a taxi service that is door to door.
The main hubs in Timaru are the Library, CBay, Hospital, TDC, Ecan and the Malls.

Initially, in February 2020 a 10-week pilot scheme will get underway. This will be followed by a one year trial during which 'The Timaru Link' will still operate. For this project - 51%  funding from NZTA the remainder by Ecan and fare recovery, not the ratepayers.

Why was Timaru chosen for this initiative? Because we were 1st in NZ with the 3 Bin Recycling System and we have a -go-to attitude.

Enjoy your long weekend.

Bev.

Rotary International statement on the certification of the eradication of wild poliovirus type 3

[Rotary.org]<http://msgfocus.rotary.org/c/1BmEG8L5GKneD4Kvcm1ypl1AXX>

On World Polio Day - 24th October, Rotary and it's Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners announced that wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3) has been eradicated worldwide. WPV3 is only the third infectious human disease-causing pathogen to be eradicated in history, following smallpox and wild poliovirus type 2. This achievement means that two of the three wild polio strains have now been wiped out, an important marker of progress against the disease.

The announcement comes on the heels of recent news that Nigeria has gone three years without a case of wild poliovirus, which means that the entire African region could be certified wild poliovirus-free in sometime in 2020.

“The eradication of wild poliovirus type three is a critical step in Rotary’s fight to eradicate polio,” said Michael K. McGovern, Chair of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee. “Even as we’re addressing major challenges in Pakistan and Afghanistan, we continue to make historic progress that shows us that eradication is possible. World Polio Day—a time to reflect on our efforts, how far we’ve come, and the work that still needs to be done to fulfil our promise of a polio-free world. It’s important that we remain optimistic and harness the momentum of this good news as we tackle the remaining challenges in the global effort to end polio.”

Anyone can help Rotary and its partners continue to make progress against polio. Duty Roster Attendance.

It is important (as noted under the "Duty Roster" on the left) that if your name is listed that you organise for someone to do your duty on the night (if you are not attending on the night or you are to be late) as often it is falling to members who are there early in the evening to do the duties (otherwise they are being done later on before the meeting - when those on duty have not appeared). By clicking here it is possible to see the "full" list showing when you are due to be on well in advance to give you plenty of time to organise (swap) with someone. Click here to see your 'host duty tasks' on the night (if you are unsure).

Garage Sale

We are running a Garage Sale on Saturday 23 Nov 19 upstairs in the Function Room at the TTCC. We a looking for a small group to organize the event with Club members assisting on the day. The venue has been booked, so just some co-ordinating to get the project on the move,

At the last meeting held at Peter Russell's on Sunday 20th organizing is well underway, with proceeds going to local charities 'Heart Kids SC' & 'Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society' (it was felt Timaru folk may not relate as well to Polio International - which was first mentioned as one of the charities) so choosing charities that keep their money local made sense. Also, advertising is now organised in 'The Courier' 2 weeks and again 1 week before the event, with the next meeting being held at Peter's on Sunday 3rd November at 3.30.

Members will be being called on to assist closer to the event. If you are interested in assisting earlier please let Shaun know.
