President Bev's Message.

Greetings,

Taking a trip to South America for 3 weeks encompassing high altitudes and 11 domestic flights is not for the faint-hearted. After Gilly signed up she embarked on a rigorous exercise programme of high altitude training at a gym in Christchurch and her general fitness. She was very pleased that she did. Machu Picchu was the highlight for her which she shared with nearly 7,000 others on that day. Similarly, with Mt Everest, her group was allotted a certain time to go up and back in this very steep terrain. It is not surprising, after looking at her photos, that this peak lay undiscovered until 1911. The itinerary gave her an understanding of life with the influences of the Andes never far away. After Peru, she was off to Bolivia and Lake Titicaca to view life on the reed rafts then the contrast of metropolitan Rio de Janeiro, the home of the Samba and Copacabana. Iguacu Falls proved to be spectacular and it is recommended that you spend time on both the Brazilian and Argentinian sides. Buenos Aires and the Tango rounded off her trip to this continent brimming with many cultures, landscapes of low and high altitudes and history dating back to at least 1438.
This presentation was well received and Gilly acknowledges and thanks John Barton for his expertise in this compilation. It was pleasing to have Stephen and Judith Humphries from Camden, Sydney and members partners at our Club meeting. Julie and Guy Dockrill hosted the Humphries. Julie met them during her trip to Nepal earlier this year.

I would like to say a big thank you to Kelsie Parrish for her efforts over 4 days at the Home and Lifestyle Show at the Sports Complex in the weekend. Andrew Falloon MP posted some photos and Kelsie was featured as well as a plug for the combined Christmas Parade with NRG, Rotary North and The Lions Clubs. Kelsie has indicated that she wishes to excuse herself from the role of our Club’s delegate for the Christmas Parade. She is willing to stay on as support for her replacement until Christmas. Thank you so much, Kelsie, for your input and energy whilst carrying out this work.

I’m looking forward to our vocational visit to the Court House and Police Station on 24 September which is followed by a meal at the Punjab. Please remember to indicate your attendance (or apology) as noted in 'this weeks meeting'.

Bev.

Timaru Courthouse & Police Station Vocational Visit 24th September.

Our first vocational visit of the year and very much a Partners night. It's a guided tour of the Timaru Courthouse and Timaru Police Station.

It's a 4.30 start as the courthouse closes at about 5.00-5.15. Andrew McCrae, the Public Prosecutor will be our guide and he will be accompanied by Senior Sergeant Dylan Murray and Andrew hopes that one of the court officials will speak to us.

Following the courthouse visit, we will transition through the Court Cells into the Police station where Dylan will take over the tour. This will be at about 5.15.
Latecomers can join us in the Courthouse or go to the Police station reception.

After the tour is over Andrew and Dylan are joining us for tea at the Punjab restaurant just a couple of minutes away so people arriving by car don't have to move their vehicles until the end of the evening. The restaurant is booked for 6.00 pm and on the menu is Butter Chicken, Lamb Tikka Masala, both cooked mild and served with Rice, Poppadoms and Naan bread. Price is $20 per person.  Only wine is BYO. Beer and soft drinks on sale at the restaurant.

John has designed a special attendance form (refer below) for this occasion. Look forward to seeing you there.

To advise if attending either the Courthouse/Police Station, Police Station only, meal only, all three (or to put an apology in) please use the following 'special' linkhttps://tinyurl.com/courthouse-visit

Home & Lifestyle Show Report.

This years Home and Lifestyle Show was a massive success, the Rotary and Lions Service Clubs worked together to put out a positive message of community and service to the people of Timaru and visitors. We all had enthusiastic volunteers to man the Exhibit and promote both the Santa Parade and their club.

Thanks to Jim Garden, Hugh and Margaret Perry and Lance Wesley who attended the show, and the many who helped at the pre-show to set up and post-show to clean up.

Thanks to the Lions Clubs who also helped with set up/clean up and manning the Exhibit.

Kelsie.

Duty Roster Attendance.

It is important (as noted under the "Duty Roster" on the left) that if your name is listed that you organise for someone to do your duty on the night (if you are not attending on the night or you are to be late) as often it is falling to members who are there early in the evening to do the duties (otherwise they are being done later on before the meeting - when those on duty have not appeared). By clicking here it is possible to see the "full" list showing when you are due to be on well in advance to give you plenty of time to organise (swap) with someone. Click here to see your 'host duty tasks' on the night (if you are unsure).

Sargeant Gilly's Joke from Last Tuesdays Session.

A man dies and arrives at Heaven. As he’s standing at the Pearly Gates he notices a huge wall of clocks behind St Peter.
He asks ‘What are all those  clocks?”
St Peter replies, ‘ Those are Lie Clocks and  every time someone tells a lie, the hands on their clock move.’
“Oh!’ says the man. ‘Whose clock is that?’ he asks, pointing.
“That’s Mother Teresa’s clock. Its hands have never moved”, says St Peter
“Wow!’ says the man. “ And whose clock is that?”
“That’s Abraham Lincoln’s clock. Its hands have only moved twice”, says St Peter.
“Where’s Boris Johnson’s clock?” asks the man
St Peter replies ‘ We are using it as a ceiling fan!”

I always spoil the good ones by getting the giggles??
