President Cheryl's Message

Hi everyone

A good turnout despite the weather for our face-to-face meeting last Tuesday. We were rewarded with an enlightening presentation by Ruth Swaile from the 'Anglican Advocacy Service'. Their energy spent supporting those struggling to advocate for themselves is commendable.

This week we have Bruce Cowan from Dunedin Rotary guest speaking on Rotary International’s pilot project for regional changes to how we down the bottom of the globe do Rotary business. We will be joined by Waimate, Timaru North and Temuka/Geraldine Rotarians. A few weeks later, we as a club, have to vote on the pilot (yes or no).
I’m looking forward to as many of you as practicable joining us either in person or via zoom to give all our guests a warm Timaru Rotary Club welcome.

See you on Tuesday

Yours aye
Cheryl

Tree Planting - Saturday, August 6th

Don't miss the opportunity to join us in planting 100 trees to commemorate our centennial.
See details below.

Timaru Rotary Centennial Tree Planting - August 6th
(100 trees - each tree representing a year of service)

The cycle track & existing Pin Oaks.

As you will be aware our Rotary Club plans to plant trees alongside the newly completed cycle track on the Pleasant Point Highway.
This is a project that has involved considerable planning over the past year but we are now at the exciting stage of planting 100 Pin Oaks plus a further 50 trees which have been kindly donated.
Considerable planning re the positioning of the trees has been carried out to meet the requirements of Waka Kotahi - NZ Transport Management & the Timaru District Council who maintain the cycle track plus involving local businesses who have been very generous with helping, in particular, Fulton Hogan for boring holes & supplying compost, Plantarama for propagating trees, an anonymous gift of 50 trees & Guy Dockrill for supplying 60m Novaflow pipe.

Now it’s your turn!

Volunteers are required for the  following;
-  3x weed eaters with operators  Thurs 4th/Fri 5th
-  Compost: 3 x vehicle & trailer to collect & deliver compost along the track  Sat 6th
-  Ute & driver to collect & distribute trees along track  Sat 6th
-  Volunteers for actual planting on Sat (holes will be dug)
-  Volunteers to organise morning tea

This will be the first big Rotary project for our year, sure to be a fun day resulting in a very worthwhile community project to be enjoyed in years to come.

Editors Humour.

A month ago, my friend (who lives in a small town) announced on Facebook that she was no longer ordering the large Coke at McDonald’s and would order only the small size. But the other day, looking to satisfy a craving, she drove up to the intercom at the drive-through and ordered a large soft drink. A disembodied voice replied, “I thought you were cutting back.” (The joys of a small town??)

The topic for the third form class was genetics. Smiling broadly, the teacher pointed to her dimples and asked, "What trait do you think I passed on to my children?"
One student called out, "Wrinkles!"

Needing to escape her hectic office, my friend fled to the mall, bought a candy bar, and then relaxed on a bench next to a businessman. Soon, she heard the sound of a crumpling wrapper and realized that he was eating her candy bar. When he went to work on an ice cream cone, she leaned over and took a huge lick. "There!" she declared. She then stormed off to her car, reached into her purse for her keys, and pulled out the candy bar she thought he'd eaten.

As George shopped, the following announcement came over the department store's PA system: "If someone here has a convertible with the top down, it just started raining. Towels are located in aisle five."
