It was a very interesting visit to the Timaru Justice Precinct on Tuesday.
The Timaru Courthouse is a state-of-the-art complex combining the best exterior architectural features of the old with a modern external and internal blend in the extension. One courtroom has been designed to facilitate trials by jury and the other without a jury. The wooden panelling of the interiors with the hinged wooden screening panels that swung outwards to shield the victim from the offender, several rows of seating and tiered floor sections certainly made you feel that it was a place of serious business. And the quicker, the better! We are very appreciative of Crown Prosecutor Andrew McCrae for his presentation and his time.
We then went next door to the Police Station, which is not state of the art! We met Senior Sergeant Dylan Murray, District 9980 District Governor-Elect. We clambered in and out of the prisoner's van that travels regularly to the Christchurch prisons, saw the offices of the Mid and South Canterbury District Command Unit, the pile of equipment once used by the unsuccessful hooch growers - (Garage sale anybody?), the speed camera van that has caught out some speedster members of the Police staff as they leave the car park and a very busy Police Station with a staffing ratio that needs to cover the area from the Rakaia to Waitaki Rivers and inland to Mt Cook.
Dylan included the poignant story of Timaru Constable Dorgan, who in 1921 was fatally shot in Stafford Street, whilst investigating a suspicious break-in. Thankfully, he is the only member of the Timaru Constabulary to be fatally injured in the line of duty. Members of the NZ Police Force commemorate those members who have lost their lives in the line of duty alongside members of the victims' families annually at the end of September.
Thank you for giving us a guided tour of your place of work, Dylan. An intensely busy place.
Our Vocational visit was followed by a dinner at the Punjab Restaurant and we were pleased that Dylan and Andrew were able to share the meal with us.
Thank you, Peter and the members of the Membership and Social committee for organising an informative excursion.
Next week is a busy night with the Past Rotary Group Exchange participants, reopening 1st part of the AGM and an induction.
Enjoy your weekend, Bev.
