Tuesday 22 August 2017
President Peter's Message

Listening to the speakers of the "New Rotary Generation" last week, a common thread was their total commitment to seek out new projects and expand their membership. Very impressive.

Next week we welcome members and partners from Altrusa Timaru for our annual quiz. So far they have entered six teams of four. Rotary members can either arrange your team beforehand or on the night.

On Tuesday 29th we will have our second club night of the year. The committee chairs will again update the club on their progress on forthcoming projects, ideas and plans and it will be your chance to ask questions or make suggestions.

Looking to the future we have an interesting evening planned for Tuesday September 19th when Malcolm Cone and Hugh Perry give their maiden speeches. Lionel Wilson will talk on Rotary Foundation "Where the money goes" and John Barton will introduce us to some of the programmes and activities Rotary is involved in in New Zealand and overseas.

This week
Tuesday 22nd August

NRG Cleanup Project
NRG and "pale, stale and male" Rotarians working well together on the cleanup project above the collapsed wall in Douglas Street.
Meet our NRG members

We had a great combined meeting with our NRG club members last Tuesday, when the NRG members introduced themselves and told us about their activities and plans.

Jess Hewitson, Kelsie Parish, Trish Johnston, Lisa Moloney and Simon Finch

We took the opportunity to induct our newest NRG member, Keslie Parish.

Latest news from Flora

Flora was our Rotary Youth Exchange Student from Austria: she spent a year hosted by members of our club in 2015-16, and attended Craighead School.

Flora wrote:

"I am on holidays right now for nine weeks. Then I have my last year of school, I am quite scared about it. I will have to do so many big exams. I finally got the confirmation that I can do a volunteer year, where I can work at the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam. I am very glad I got the job, not a lot of people do. So I finished school very well (one of the best students in my class) and I am just enjoying the holidays.

Right now I am on holiday in Tanzania on a Safari with my family. It is amazing. I have seen so many animals already. We saw a Lion that caught a Zebra in front of us. Also the culture and the mentality is so different. I really enjoy it!"

New Members' Directory

The new 2017-18 Members' Directory is available; if you haven't got yours yet ask Robyn Baldwin for a copy.

As always there are a couple of corrections needed:

On page 8, Jenny Ensor's husband should be Basil, not Jenny!

On page 10, our newest member, Keslie Parish, joined in 2017, not 1905 (which is actually the date Rotary was formed).

If you find any other corrections needed please let Gilly know and we'll put the details in the Bulletin.

The Directory also has details of committees, and club duties.

If you're a smartphone or tablet user there are handy Android and iPhone ClubRunner apps with all member contact details.
