President Jess's Message.

Hello everyone in Zulu this week, our rugby fans have had some bad news from South Africa! ☹
We were lucky to have one of our local frontline workers Kieran Parsons talk to us about his role in the Police Armed Offenders Squad. I really enjoyed hearing about the humble beginnings of the “Bulletproof Beret’s” -basically only armed with a pistol! I was surprised to hear that there were only 17 squads nationwide and I would guess that this number will only increase due to the rising drug/gang problems we have in our country. It is a sad reality that the A.O.S. is called out more often now than they ever have in their “Blue Role” capacity to assist the Officers without the specialist training the AOS have had. We are lucky here in Timaru as our A.O.S. squad also has a dog in the group, who has also had specialised training!
We had Russell Egan join us this week from the Nelson West Rotary Club (Click for attached article) Russell’s father was a member of our club many years ago. Thanks for popping in Russell 😊
Paul informed us of the passing of our former member Allan Lee. Allan was a member of our club for many years and played a big part in the tramping group and held numerous positions within the club. Sympathies go out to Allan’s family at this sad time.
We received a lovely letter for thanks from CCS Disability Action this week (click here) We donated from the Moyes Trust.
We will also be hearing from our RYE student Yannick in Switzerland (either by 'Zoom' or pre-recorded video) & Emma from MVHS speaking to us on her 'Outward Bound' course.
Followed by a Directors Meeting for the Board at Lynette & Lionel's home (166B North St).
Members are reminded to put in an apology for the meeting by noon on Monday (otherwise they are liable to be charged) - click on the following link to apologise:-

When doing Host Duties (i.e. Duty Roster), please remember that you set tables, raffles etc up for the night.
Then at the end of the meeting you need to pack up again and return table numbers etc. into the box and put away.
The large sign outside door must also be packed away (this part isn't always been done).
It then falls to those leaving last.
RAFFLE PRIZES
For this Rotary year, President Jess would like members to take turns at providing the raffle prize (no alcohol please), either by buying a prize to the value of $10 to $15 (keep the receipt and ask Treasurer Jenny for reimbursement using the claims form click here...) or maybe you have a suitable prize you'd like to donate.
To make it simple to keep track of whose turn it is, the person on Host Duty 2 will be asked to provide the raffle prize for the week.
When it's your turn to provide the prize:
Please put the prize on the Host table no later than 5:30 pm.
Make sure there's a raffle sheet (from the host bin) and a pen on the table.
If you are unable to attend Rotary, and you are unable to find someone to swap, please contact Robyn Baldwin so she can arrange cover for the night.

JR McKenzie Youth Education Fund - Outward Bound Scholarships.
Each year, the JR McKenzie Youth Education Fund sponsors young people to attend a 21 day Outward Bound Course. This year is no different and we are fortunate to have two scholarships to give away, therefore we are again on the hunt for potential course participants.
Members are asked to have a think to see if they know anyone between the ages of 20-29 who may wish to enter next years RYLA programme in Queenstown January 29th - February 3rd (refer the following & contact Mike Parr - Timaru organiser).

This year, COVID has made planning and running the annual Polio Movie Event much more challenging than usual! There will be issues in some locations but, with appropriate measures, such as masks, sanitiser and sensible seating arrangements, it is possible for events to go ahead in most areas.
This year’s movie is I Am Woman. It’s the story of Australian singer/songwriter, Helen Reddy, who shot to global stardom in the seventies. While set in the US, the movie is a local production. Tilda Cobham-Hervey is sensational in the lead role.
Helen Reddy passed away on Tuesday, 29th September in Los Angeles from Dementia.
Remember this is "your" bulletin and so please email information to me on what your committee is doing (or planning) so everyone can be aware of it.
Lack of the above will mean the bulletin is not advising the members of what is happening in the club & particapation will be down.

Editors Humour.
A self-important college freshman walking along the beach took it upon himself to explain to the senior citizen resting on the steps why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation.
“You grew up in a totally different world, in fact, an almost primitive one”, the student said loud enough for others to hear. “The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, men walking on the moon. We have nuclear energy, ships and cell phones, computers with light speed ….and much more.”
After a brief silence, the senior citizen responded as follows. “You are right, son. We didn’t have those things when we were young…..so we invented them. Now, you arrogant little sh*t, what are you doing for the next generation?”
The applause was amazing!
