President Peter's Message
GUEST SPEAKER
Bede Curran delivered a very informative talk about his job and how he saw the long term future of our district. He answered many questions during his allotted time with many members continuing to talk to him after the meeting closed. Always a good sign.
ASHBURTON ROTARY CLUB VISIT- SCOTT BROWN - AMERICAN AMBASSADOR- EXTRA DETAILS.
The format of the night is fellowship from 6.00pm to 6.30 pm followed by the meal and the guest speaker. Invitations have gone out to the Rotary clubs of Ashburton Plains, Lincoln, Avon-Otakaro and Timaru. The caterers have been changed to the "All Fed Catering Company" and the cost is now $40 per person. A bar will be available. Ashburton Rotary suggest wearing our club badges and they would like to have final attendance numbers by March 21st.

Hot Dog Caravan Clean Working Bee.
There was a good turnout to give the Hot Dog Van a thorough clean inside and out Last Friday 23rd February.
Photo shows Jim Garden, Bruce Borrell & Lance Wensley cleaning HDV. Other cleaners were Russell Finlay, Bev Slooten, Judy Dolman, Gilly Oppenheim & myself who in total volunteered 21 hours.
A job well done by our follow members.

THANK YOU ROTARY: YOU'RE A SIGHT-SAVER
We've received this thank-you letter from the Fred Hollows Foundation following the Club's donation of $5,000 for cataract surgery.
Dear Members
Sight is one of the greatest gifts you can give, so thank you for not holding back with your compassionate and life-changing support.
Your generous donation of $5,000 will fund 200 desperately needed cataract operations enabling us to change the lives of people in Vanuatu. Currently through our outreach team visiting Vanuatu twice a year, a maximum of 200 cataract surgeries have been conducted. This is not enough surgeries to treat new incidences of cataract blindness, let alone address the backlog of patients needing surgery.
With the proposed upgrade and extension of the Port Vila National Eye Centre and locally qualified Dr Kasso returning at the end of 2018, we will be well on our way to ensuring the national eye care system can deliver at least 810 cataract surgeries each year, which will be possible utilising a further two trained Ophthalmologists.
Thank you again for your help towards making the world a place where no one is needlessly blind.

Horror Maze 2018.
Once again we have been asked for volunteers to help out with security "within" the maze (yes, this year some of us will actually be "in the maze" itself) and manning the front gate.
Dates are: 16th/17th Feb, 24th Feb, 2nd/3rd March and 9th/10th March. Times 8.30pm-11.30pm and they are
asking for between 7-12 people on each date.

An Outing To The Movie "Breathe"
Social outing to movie Breathe on Wednesday February 28th at 7.00pm. This is an excellent true story about Robin and Diana Cavendish, an adventurous young couple, who refuse to give up in the face of the devastating diagnosis of Robin’s polio at just 28. Robin and Diana dare to escape the hospital ward to seek out a full life together, raising their young son, traveling and devoting their lives to helping other polio patients. The film is produced by Robin’s son and is very relevant for Rotary with our End Polio campaign. Special price of $8.00 per person. I’ve booked the 78 seat theatre, so invite friends and family! I’ve also mentioned it to Rotary North. Suggestion that we go to Zest or Coffee Culture after the film. Rotaract Club of Timaru Charter.
Above is a copy of the programme for the "Presentation of the Rotaract Club of Timaru Charter" given to me by Anne Carnie who was a charter member in January 1971. Dr Benny was the president of our club at that time.
Rotaract celebrated fifty years in 2017 - hence the Timaru club was formed just 4 years after the first clubs inception in 1968.
