President Peter's Message
During my talk with Dr. Mohammad Khalid he asked me to guess how many people were waiting for cataract operations worldwide. I'm not going to tell you my guess which was way off as he then told me the figure is approaching 40 million! I have done some research to find out why the numbers are so high so here are a few extracts from publications. "The demand for cataract surgery is increasing tremendously, not only because of the expanding ageing population, but because the age at which people now demand cataract surgery has lowered. People ask for it as a way to have a better quality of vision and reduce the need for glasses. Modern life has expanded the need for good to excellent eyesight. On a daily basis we use computers, cell phones, notebooks, iPods, Kindles etc. The World Health Organisation estimate that by 2020 32 million cataract operations will be performed, up from 12 million in 2000 and this won't be enough. Time is of the essence. Diabetes, which can cause blindness, is spiralling out of control in the Pacific with some of the highest rates in the world. In Samoa, it's estimated nearly a quarter of the population has the disease. Our club has already helped in a small way through the Fred Hollows Foundation and if we can help again I for one would be 100% behind it.

This is a day visit to Dunedin to learn more about Rotary and where it is headed.
This day is open to all member's and will be a well worthwhile day.

May 5th 6th and 7th.
This will be a great conference to attend lots of great inspirational speakers.
A fun way to get the fellowship with other rotarians from around our District.
We NEED to book accommodation now as it's a big weekend in Dunedin.
The theme of the Saturday Night Function is yet to be announced as Bruce is keeping this secret for now.
Again lets gets many people there and show our District how well Timaru can have Fun.
The Week That Was:
At last week’s meeting Dr Rachel Garden shared her thesis on Factors effecting motivation to achieve excellence (A Doctorial study). A study which involved many students across a wide geographical area, this was very thought provoking and raised many questions from those present. Rachel showed she is a very passionate teacher who strives for the best motivational outcomes for all students.
In celebration of International Womens , Bev Slooten (along with Adrian) and myself took up the invitation from Waimate Rotary Club to attend their meeting and listen to Kirsten Patterson. This too, was an inspiring talk given by a very dynamic woman. (two in one week, much food for thought)

Centennial Fund Proposal
Object:
Set aside funds over the next ten years to mark the 100th Centennial Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Timaru and make a lasting gift to the people of this community who we have supported and who have supported this club.
Fund target amount:
$100,000 would be a meaningful figure equating to $1,000 for every year the club has been in existence.
Where will the funds come from:
If the gift is of a charitable nature, $5,000 per annum from the Charitable Trust matched by a special fundraising activity each year for the remaining $5,000.
Type of gift:
That can be decided upon during the last 5 year period.
The above will be discussed at the 3rd April tea meeting & a motion moved to allow (if passed) planning to be started.

Members Assisting At the Horror Maze
Like last year we have had members travelling to Studholme to assist with the maize maze over the last four weekends raising money for Plunket (including Kelsie Parish who has not missed a night to be "inside' the maze to assist in the "scarying").
A good time was had by all who went down
(most more then once).
