President Bev's Message.

Greetings,

August is 'Rotary International Membership and New Club Development Month'.

Thank you, Cheryl, for the Rotary Club of Timaru meeting notice in The Courier 'What's On' column.
The sign at the TTCC gateway is outstanding, due to the efforts of Shaun and John. Thank you. We will hear more from our Membership committee in the coming weeks.

Damien Bromwich provided us with a very comprehensive outline of the research carried out by DOC into the lifestyle and quirks of our local endangered population of the Long Tailed Bat. The big project for DOC last summer was installing wide aluminium bands around the known 'Roost trees'. So far, they know of 257 roost trees dotted between Geraldine, Temuka, Pleasant Point, Kakahu, Opihi River and the junction of the Te Ngawai and Opihi Rivers.  It appears to the DOC team that there are more roost trees waiting to be discovered. These bats are totally insectivorous and eat up to 1,000 insects per night. The research indicates that the bats tend to stay in their locality and rotate between the roost trees within that area.

Enjoy your weekend.

Bev

Doug Weir was the trainer and he hired Michelle to ride Prince of Penzance.

This is being hosted by the Waimate and Oamaru Clubs on 18 October in Waimate.

Gilly In Peru.

Gilly is currently holidaying in Peru and is photographed standing on top of 'Machu Picchu' which is an altitude of 2,430 m above sea level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest. The natural setting, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna.

ROMAC NZ CHARITABLE TRUST - Thanks

Please accept our sincere thanks for the $5,000.00 donation that your Charitable Trust has made to ROMAC. A receipt is attached for your records.

With your help, ROMAC is able to continue having around 20 cases per year in New Zealand – that’s around two per month considering that there are fewer cases over the Christmas/New Year holiday period.

Every dollar donated goes towards bringing a smile back into the faces of the children from many south Pacific countries who receive life saving and dignity restoring medical procedures in New Zealand.

Thanks again for your support.

Best regards
Geoff
