Thought for the week
As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them - John F Kennedy

President Peter's Message

A big thank you to our committee chairs for their presentations last week and special thanks to all the committee members who have been supportive. Collectively, the committees have met fifteen times in the two months since the changeover in late June and I'm heartened by their willingness to bring forward new ideas, which I'm sure will result in worthwhile projects for our club.

Thanks also to Russell Finlay, our mystery speaker, who turned back the clock and reminded us all of school mathematics. Bring back the Rood and the Perch!

Lionel touched briefly on World Polio Day in October and it's hard to believe that when Rotary joined forces in 2007 with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in this Global Polio Eradication Initiative there were 1315 cases worlwide. Together they have contributed over $US 1.6 billion to end polio and over 2.5 billion children have been reached with the vaccine. So far this year there have been only five cases of polio worldwide. Lionel's presentation to the club will be on October 24th.

Alzheimers Memory Walk
Saturday September 16th
Botanic Gardens

Alzheimers South Canterbury is holding its Annual Memory Walk in the Botanic Gardens at 11.00am on Saturday 16th October. The walk is around the Park Centre  and there will be entertainment and a sausage sizzle on completion of the walk.

The Memory Walk is a chance for everyone in our community to honour family members or share a memory of a loved one. It is an opportunity to show support for those who suffer from dementia and their carers. We are asking participants to wear a purple T-shirt. These are available free from the office of Alzheimers South Canterbury at Communit6y House, 27 Strathallan Street.

New Members' Directory

The new 2017-18 Members' Directory is available; if you haven't got yours yet ask Robyn Baldwin for a copy.

As always there are a couple of corrections needed:

On page 8, Jenny Ensor's husband should be Basil, not Jenny!

On page 10, our newest member, Keslie Parish, joined in 2017, not 1905 (which is actually the date Rotary was formed).
                        On page 11, Bev Slooten's mobile number is 021 184 6468

If you find any other corrections needed please let Gilly know and we'll put the details in the Bulletin.

The Directory also has details of committees, and club duties.

If you're a smartphone or tablet user there are handy Android and iPhone ClubRunner apps with all member contact details.
