Thought for the week

President Bev's Message.

Welcome to the new Rotary year of 2019-20.
I am looking forward to being your President for the year and working alongside you as we all work together for another successful Rotary year.

On Sunday some of the boarders from Waihi School gave us a helping hand loading the storage container with bags of firewood. They zoomed around with the sack barrows whilst we Rotarians loaded them up and the job was done in no time at all. Tony had some morning tea for them which was really appreciated. Doing some community service is a component of the Waihi School Curriculum. Thank you, Jess, for making that connection.

Sergeant Gilly got the ball rolling with her Ode to the Rotary Club of Timaru 2019-20. A fine effort.

Paul and Bruce followed that up by engaging Rob Dunn from ARA who spoke about the Predator Control Programme he has set up for the Otipua Wetlands. Rob spotted a stoat whilst using the tracks one day and the same happened in the following 2 weeks.  Along with his students, TBHS pupils and the Timaru District Council enough data was collected to allow them to set up this programme in March 2019. It was vitally important for this to be in place before the bird nesting this spring. Most of the pests are rats and mice and were very pleased to catch a stoat. Their traps are purchased from DOC and the team have realized that they need to vary the baits to keep up the momentum.
During their work down here, this team of enthusiasts have also noted that the signs need to be updated or replaced, picnic facilities installed in the scenic spots to encourage the users/visitors to linger. They hope to set up a website so that the public can feed in what they have observed whilst visiting.
I will be using the Wetlands more often now, thanks to the care and enthusiasm of this team of people to make this area even more significant for the Timaru community.
Otipua means O - place of, tipua - goblin!

Next week we will be hearing from Judith Johnson JP and her 40 years plus with this organisation.

Stay warm, enjoy your week.
Bev.

Last Sunday morning Tony, Jim, John, Bruce Borrell, Paul, Stephen, Basil, Russell Finlay, Jess, Kirsten, Bev., Bruce Fraser & Dave Darling along with 19 pupils & 1 teacher from Waihi school finished loading a 40 foot container with 700 bags of firewood in preparation to move it to Robert Odey's yard on the port.
