President Peter's Message
On Tuesday week Bruce Cowan, the District Governor is visiting us and the theme of his talk is "Celebrating Rotary" He wants to meet as many members as possible so he will be available at the TTCC from 4.00pm onwards. I hope as many of you as possible will come and meet him and he will of course will have time for a chat at the end of the evening.
On behalf of Rotary I accepted an invitation from the Life Education Trust (Mid & S.C) to hear a talk by Chris Chambers who has been on a trip to the U.K where he drove his classic baby Austin in the famous London to Brighton classic car race. Very funny stories of his time there and probably quite lucky not to have been arrested for driving "accidentally" on the motorway a couple of times. The title of his talk was "Adventure before Dementia"

2018 ReCyclers' Trip
Destination: Queenstown
Departure: 11th March
There are numerous trails around Queenstown, Arrowtown, Lake Hayes and Gibbston, all suitable for novice cyclists. Almost all trails are off road and are designated trails especially for cyclists.
We already have a good number going, but there is room for anyone else who would like to go. Accommodation is limited, so if you are interested, please let me know and I'll send you some information.
Last year the Timaru City Council upgraded the walking path to Jacks Point light house to a cycle track making it much more accessible for local residents and visitors to Timaru.
It is a favourite ride for the Rotary Recyclers spoiled by the fact that there is no site information regarding this significant South Canterbury landmark.
The recycling group decided that this would be a good Rotary project and after researching the Lighthouse, obtaining approval from Maritime New Zealand and the TCC we are now proceeding with printing of a stainless steel A4 size plaque - stainless steel chosen to minimise vandalism and damage from sea spray.
Wording for the plaque below - note acknowledgment to Rotary Timaru together with the Rotary emblem will be included bottom of plaque.

Tuhawaika (Jacks) Point Lighthouse
Tuhawaiki Point, or Jacks Point, gets its name from Hone (Jack) Tuhawaika, a Maori chief belonging to Ngai Tahu and Kai Tahu tribes
The Lighthouse originally resided on Somes Island (1886) and was constructed on site at Tuhawaika Point by the Timaru Harbour Board in 1903
A sole keeper lived on site until the light station was automated in 1930
The lighthouse can be seen for 10 nautical miles and is part of a coastal network that is owned and maintained by Maritime New Zealand

We were very sorry to hear that Mo passed away peacefully on September 20th in Canada.
Mo was an enthusiastic member of our club for seven years and he and his wife Nancy really enjoyed being involved in club activities, often dressuing up to sell raffle tickets at our auctions.
Mo owned a flooring contracting company in Vancouver until he retired in 1995. A number of years after the death of his first wife Betty in 2003 Mo moved back to NZ and married his old childhood friend Nancy Hammond in 2010.
When Nancy died in 2014 Mo moved back to Canada to be near his children. He lived life with no regrets and an unwavering positive attitude. He leaves behind a legacy of humour, positive energy and fairness and fond memories for all who knew him.
One of Mo's favourite sayings was, "Treat the world with a smile and the world will smile back at you."
