President Peter's Message
As part of the Rotary International Initiative to plant 1.2 million trees worldwide this Rotary year, the club board has agreed to purchase
110 trees for planting by us over the next couple of months. They have been purchased from the Timaru District Council at an average price of $6.50.
N.R.G will be joining in the planting and have contributed $150 towards the cost of the trees.
They are 55 Totara, 30 Kahitatea and 25 Matai. I recently visited Wetlands with Ken Linscott, the Chair of Wetlands Trust and saw a beautiful area next to one of the lakes which he has agreed to set aside for Rotary. The trees have been specifically chosen as suitable for growing in this area.I hope this will be the start of an ongoing project where our club can extend the site by planting of more trees, shrubs and having the occasional working bee. I am now waiting for the ground to be prepared and trees to be delivered.
We have some great speakers in our club and last week was testament to this as talks by Malcolm and Hugh took us through the highs and lows of their lives.Thank you both very much.

NRG & Timaru Rotary Food Stall At Home & Living Expo.
We were invited to run a food stall at the Timaru Home and Living Expo (with only 6 days notice before the actual event) Needless to say it was a frantic few days but we managed to pull together and have a food stall for the whole 3 days.
It was a very good PR event for NRG and the Timaru Rotary Club and we managed to make a few hundred dollars too! (Although not as much as we had initially hoped for, we have a few ideas for the next Expo!)
Thank you very much to those who helped out over the 3 days and the days before to help organise the event with me and thanks to the Directors for your continued support of NRG.

Jacks Point Lighthouse Plaque.
Last year the Timaru City Council upgraded the walking path to Jacks Point light house to a cycle track making it much more accessible for local residents and visitors to Timaru.
It is a favourite ride for the Rotary Recyclers spoiled by the fact that there is no site information regarding this significant South Canterbury landmark.
The recycling group decided that this would be a good Rotary project and after researching the Lighthouse, obtaining approval from Maritime New Zealand and the TCC we are now proceeding with printing of a stainless steel A4 size plaque - stainless steel chosen to minimise vandalism and damage from sea spray.
Wording for the plaque below - note acknowledgment to Rotary Timaru together with the Rotary emblem will be included bottom of plaque.

Tuhawaika (Jacks) Point Lighthouse
Tuhawaiki Point, or Jacks Point, gets its name from Hone (Jack) Tuhawaika, a Maori chief belonging to Ngai Tahu and Kai Tahu tribes
The Lighthouse originally resided on Somes Island (1886) and was constructed on site at Tuhawaika Point by the Timaru Harbour Board in 1903
A sole keeper lived on site until the light station was automated in 1930
The lighthouse can be seen for 10 nautical miles and is part of a coastal network that is owned and maintained by Maritime New Zealand
