President Bev's Message.

Greetings,

I was relieved to hear of an organisation such as 'Pathways' who enable and support people to make a fresh start. The clients/customers have made their own decision to make this change and often have had to distance themselves from family and friends to carry this through. Pathways may be approached to help to get a drivers licence, a forklift operator ticket, find affordable accommodation or reintegration into the community after imprisonment. For the latter, a drivers licence of forklift operating ticket has been attained whilst doing their time.
During question time it was acknowledged that poor literacy and numeracy skills were a fundamental issue for many of the inmate's 'Pathways' engage with. This organisation can only give support for a year, such is the demand for this service. Pathways work closely with the Corrections Service, Parole Board, Salvation Army and other support organisations.
We are very lucky to have Pathways in Canterbury and it seems for every 2 prisons in New Zealand there should be
Pathways. Worldwide, the statistics show that reintegration through these types of programmes can heavily reduce the risks of being incarcerated.

Next week we have Dave and Kim Woods reliving their Camino Walk. I'm very much looking forward to hearing all about this adventure.

Bev.

Duty Roster Attendance.

It is important (as noted under the "Duty Roster" on the left) that if your name is listed that you organise for someone to do your duty on the night (if you are not attending on the night or you are to be late) as often it is falling to members who are there early in the evening to do the duties (otherwise they are being done later on before the meeting - when those on duty have not appeared). By clicking here it is possible to see the "full" list showing when you are due to be on well in advance to give you plenty of time to organise (swap) with someone. Click here to see your 'host duty tasks' on the night (if you are unsure).

This is a joint venture with Timaru North, so assuming we split the day 50/50 four people will be required. The venue has been booked, so just some co-ordinating to get the project on the move, with proceeds going to International (Polio) and a local charity(s) to be confirmed. If you are interested in either organising or assisting on the day please let Shaun know.
