President Bev's Message.

Greetings,

September is 'Basic Education and Literacy' month for Rotary International.
Our Club is very supportive of this theme through our local projects i.e. Science and Technology Forum, Hands-on Science, Dictionaries in Schools and International projects i.e. Nepalese Teacher with TGHS, Child Maternal Health in Nepal and also Toilets in Schools Nepal.  Basic Education and Literacy is a focus of Rotary International and it underpins many of the decisions we make regarding the support we give to requests for grants throughout the year.

Martin Kane gave a very interesting presentation on Electric cars. The uptake in NZ has been slower than anticipated. However, the industry is endeavouring to provide the necessary infrastructure as quickly as and as wide as possible to increase this uptake. Martin generously offered test rides following the Club meeting which were eagerly taken up.
I found Martin's Tesla X extremely quiet both inside and outside. The Tesla X would have to be taken out of our garage to enable our passengers to get into their seats (through the rear
'falcon-wing' doors).

I'm looking forward to Matthew Gray's presentation next week on the Pathways organisation, which offers a fresh start programme for those wanting to change their lives around.

Bev.

Timaru Home & Lifestyle Show Manpower.

Below is the information for the home show.

Pre-Show: we need 8 (or as many as 20) to lay some carpet tiles and move tables at the 'Southern Trust Events Centre'. Between 8.30 pm and 11.30 pm on Tuesday 10th September, it's not heavy lifting but would be good if there is someone who is able to lift.

Show: there will be up to 2 stands size for all clubs to utilize at the event, as well as a large TV to showcase some pictures we have. The stand will have to be manned, and we are working on a roster. If anyone can help, contact me with names and available times for the weekend (Friday 13th - Sunday 15th). Posters and signs will also be displayed, with particular reference to the Christmas Parade.

Post-Show: opposite of pre-show, piling up carpet tiles and moving tables. This is taking place Monday 16th September 11 am - 2 pm.

Thanks
Kelsie Parish (kelsieparish14@gmail.com or (0279)251 418).

Waimate School of Music Movie Fundraiser - Fri 13th Sept 7.30pm

Hope everyone is having a great time in the drizzle.

Just a quick update on the School of Music first (before the pitch). We're now into the second term of lessons. We have 55 students enrolled (for 67 lesson slots - 12 are learning 2 instruments). This equates to 12% of the eligible primary aged student. The students are loving it (as are the parents).

On the fundraising side, we're hoping to continue subsidising the lessons for at least the first year so we can ensure a lasting legacy of kids wanting to learn music can maintain itself - it's much easier if all of your friends are learning instruments, and we don't want money to be a barrier!

So with that in mind, we are hosting a fundraising movie at the theatre next Friday 13th Sept starting at 7.30pm. The movie follows the band Herbs and is getting rave reviews.

If you could tell all of your friends that would be fantastic. I'm also looking for a couple of helpers to take tickets on the night, so let Bev know if you're keen (also contact Bev. if you want tickets).

Cheers
Ryan Luckman (Waimate Rotary Club).

Members Rotary Apparel.

All Members should have received by now an email Stephen sent out Wednesday 21st August with a list of Rotary apparel to select from and a link to the order form to be filled out.

As mentioned in the email the club has decided that we would like members when working in public to be easily identified as Rotarians (so the club will provide a T-shirt- at no cost to you (valued at $20.00), if you choose to order any of the other clothing option(s) on the list instead of the T-shirt the club will pay $20.00 toward the cost. If you order a free T-Shirt you can order other additional items at your cost at the prices listed).

Can all those members who have not placed their orders yet please do so by Friday 13th September.

If anyone has any questions (or a problem placing their order) click contact Stephen.
